Check Application Status
After your organization submits application package(s) through Grants.gov, you can check the progress of the application(s). The Check Application Status page provides a list of of previously submitted applications. Depending on your roles and access levels for applicant organizations, you may only be able to see applications you worked on.
Once the application enters the initial review process with the federal grant-making agency, applicants will need to use the agency's system to track further progress or status.
How to Check Application Status

Click the Check Application Status link, which appears in the Applicants menu if you are an individual applicant or have an Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) role.

Status |
Description |
| Receiving | The application has not yet been received by Grants.gov, but is processing normally, and is waiting in the queue to be received by Grants.gov. |
| Received | Grants.gov has received the application, but the application is awaiting validation. |
| Validated | Grants.gov validated the application and it is available for the agency to download. |
| Rejected with Errors | Grants.gov was unable to process your application because of an error(s) and cannot accept the application until you correct the error(s) and successfully resubmit the application. You will receive email providing the errors with the application. |
| Received by Agency | The agency has confirmed receipt of the application package. |
| Agency Tracking Number Assigned | The agency has assigned an internal tracking number to your application. This is the last status that Grants.gov tracks. Updates beyond this must be checked with the agency directly. Note: All agencies do not assign tracking numbers. If you do not see an agency tracking number, this does not infer that the agency did not receive or process your application. The assignment of tracking numbers is based on the policy of a particular agency. |
| Purged | The application has been on the system for 5 years or more and has been purged from the system. Note: The application purge period was increased from 180 days to 5 years on October 20, 2015, so all applications submitted on or after April 22, 2015 will be stored for 5 years. All applications submitted before April 22, 2015 were deleted under the previous 180 day purge period. |
Download and Verify Your Submitted Application
After submission, you should download a copy of your application to keep for your records and to verify its contents.
Access the application from the Details tab on the Manage Workspace page
Download the ZIP file and review all included documents.
Applications can only be downloaded when in one of the following statuses:
Validated
Received by Agency
Agency Tracking Number Assigned
Email Confirmations and Tracking
After submitting an application, you should receive a submission receipt confirmation email, and either of the following:
A validation confirmation email
A rejection email with errors
You will also receive a confirmation PDF in the Grants.gov interface, which includes your tracking number.
If you do not receive emails within two business days:
Check your spam/junk folder.
Allow emails from Grants.gov in your email settings.
If still missing, contact support@grants.gov.
Tracking After Agency Retrieval
Once the agency retrieves your application:
You may receive an additional email confirming retrieval (timing varies).
Grants.gov will no longer provide status updates beyond this point.
You must track progress directly through the awarding agency.
If your status is “Agency Tracking Number Assigned”:
The agency may provide an internal tracking number via email.
Use that number to track your application in the agency’s system.
If no number is provided, retain your Grants.gov tracking number for reference.
